Cress - Review

Fiction. Fantasy. Romance. Young-adult. Science Fiction. Dystopia. Fairy-tales

A mixture of fairy tales, stories of princesses and technology, spaceships and modernity is what Marissa Meyer proposes in this series of books.

In Cress (the third book in the series), the story of Cinder, Scarlet, Wolf and Captain Thorne intersects with that of Cress, a girl who was imprisoned as a child on a satellite between the moon and the earth. An excellent hacker who, in collaboration with the group, will put into play the marriage plans of Queen Levana (the villain).

What can I tell you about this book?

Maybe there isn’t such a thing as fate. Maybe it’s just the opportunities we’re given, and what we do with them.

Plot - Coherence

This book..... This book consolidates the story, gives it strength and makes it more coherent. In this book the stories of all the characters come together and make sense, everything is united towards a goal, which gives little room for loose ends.

I liked this story more than the previous ones, the characters are more explored and each one of them has representativeness for what happens. The book shows an extensive work by the author and it is a solid book, congruent, with power, that entertains and that knows how to tell itself.

This story is full of values, of revolution, of courage, of friendship, of loyalty. It combines very well emotions with human acts and represents in a discreet way aspects of modern society, as well as it represents very well the moment of adolescent fear when acquiring greater responsibilities over their own lives. It is an intriguing story where action is never lacking.

Setting - Narrative Style

The language is simple, contemporary. The phrases are short and the dialogues are precise. All this elements allow the reader to imagine the scenes, imagine the silences, go to the rhythm of the characters and discover their interaction.

Meyer has a simple and direct short narrative style, which captures to the audience and she knows how to endow his characters with characteristic features, which leads the reader to know them better and to intuit what they think and feel. She also knows how to equip the scenes with the basics to create a unique setting and interaction.

It's fantastic!

Characters

The characters are well constructed, each one has its moment of fame and each one has some adorable and unique characteristics that make it possible for the reader to recognize them and get close to them throughout the story.

Something I liked quite a lot is that the readers can appreciate in each character both positive and negative aspects. This is what gives the story its humanity. Also, it is possible to know the thoughts, fears and plans of each character, you can put yourself in their shoes.

The relationships between them are colorful and the humor is very well combined. The only thing that doesn't convince me are the declarations of love, nor the ways in which romance is established between them.

My favorite: Capitan Thorne

Surprise - Enjoy

Cress (and The Lunar Chronicles in general) is a book full of quality. It is part of a serie that entertains, that moves, that excites. It is a book that makes reading a pleasure, that is enjoyed.

It has unexpected turns, a plot full of adventure and full of surprises. Moreover, it is a story that empowers women and that, besides being princesses, gives them a courage and strength that sometimes is not found in other stories or fairy tales.

You should #read it completely.
